Each one of us in our society has some level of skills in observation. It was new and exciting to learn observation skills and its theory, concepts and its application as a part of academic course. Initially, I took a while to understand the processes when I was first put on a case study on observation skills. We were assigned with the task to visit our assigned classes and observe students and teachers. While it appeared a fun initially, but I realized it difficult to just hang yourself in one corner and simply observe the class. But with the proper mix of theory and observation I understood the benefits of this. This continued for first few days where I was observing children of the class and simply started collecting as much details and analyzing them. This helped me know each child, their nature, interests, emotions, thoughts and area where they are struggle most Etc. It also helped me know the class dynamics, their friends, who’s what, their comfort level and places where I really reed to see to keep the class going in more effective way. I observed the beauty of a group work and how it unfolds the hidden potential in the child. It is important to for a group in a way that their learning can be optimized. There are many small and minute things that goes on in the class, these very are important and are unearthed after a skillful observation. I also observed different classes, higher and lower than my assigned class, their behavior changes according to their classes.During our exposure on observation skills, I also observed my collaborating teacher along with the children. Here was an ample learning opportunities, I observed my class teacher’s teaching style, pedagogical practices, classroom management techniques and their effectiveness in different situations. Observing my CT was very useful, it was like observing a mentor, an expert from whom one learn and imitate, and helps one slowly make your own learning.
Observing different teachers helped me see how and why student behave differently with different teachers. It is like you are getting to see so many different ways with its own pros and cones, and that it’s you who has to decide what to take.
When I started my co-teaching, these observations were of great help to me. They helped me to collect relevant information about children, their behavior, likings, strengths and improvement area. All these were very useful in preparing the lesson plan and managing the classes.
Much talked about ‘Differential learning’ can’t be effectively implemented without knowing the state and need of the class which is only possible through a good and detailed observation of the class. Observation is the backbone of the class teaching but this doesn’t mean that one needs to sit with pen and paper every time and keep taking note of the things. Over a period of time one gets a hold of what to observe and then observation becomes a continuous imbedded process throughout the journey.
